2. Samjae

2-2-1. Requirment of Samjae

Why do we have to talk of Samjae? For what do we need the concept of Samjae? Because it is through the concept of Samjae that we can talk what we cannot distinguish that is the base for distinguishable entities. This is why we need them. This has been called as Bang Pyeon(expedient means) by Buddhists, thus, it is "because the Buddhas employ the power of expedient means that they make distinctions in the one Buddha vehicle and preach it as three."1)

It is by means of concept of Samjae that we can see through the originally undistinguishable foundation, through which we can also formalize the logical framework for the existence of everything distinguishable, thus, we can get the scheme of changes. After all, Samjae is the framework of talking the one truth that is beyond distinction. Therefore, the Korean traditional thought, i.e. "the truth of Han Baegeom is just three and one"2), "if there were only one without three it means loss of its use, and if there were only three without one it implies lack of its body. Therefore the one is the body of three while the three the use of the one."3) Here, the use refers to the development of logical discourse based on distinction, while the body means the nondistinctive true figure of things.

<the truth of Han Baegeom is just three and one>

Everything that there is is originally nondistinctive so that we can say nothing about it and there is not the constant true figure either. Therefore, it has been told, "Non-being becomes 'right seeing' while being is 'false seeing', so it presents itself sometimes as truth and sometimes as falsity, its clue cannot be known",4) and the Diamond Sutra also taught us "wheresoever are material characteristics there is delusion; but whoso perceives that all characteristics are in fact no-characteristics, perceives the Tathagata."5)

When we say of Samjae what we intend to mean is the one as a whole, thus the undistinguishable. Here it is the relations of Samjae that enables distinction to be. That is, they are the object, the whole that enables it, and the recognizing subject that founds the both epistemologically. Since this scheme of Samjae includes the implicit concept of nondistinctive whole in it immanently, it can be said to be three and one at once. If we say of the one only, however right it may be, we cannot get conceptual development from it. Hence saying "no three then no use".6) On the other hand, if you say Samjae losing the oneness of the whole it would mean that you lose your base and your argument will lose. Therefore they taught us "Only three without the one fails to get its body"7)

Just like the being of everything so is the TAEKWONDO itself is only one in Taekwondo. It appears as the one skill, i.e. Ilgiyae in actuality. Thus, "as every true Taekwondo man knows, the ultimate figure of Taekwondo is a simple skillart, a simple mind, and a simple reality."(Ch. 6) And "Taekwondo begins at one skill and becomes complete in the one skill. ¡¦ Taekwondo is in nothing more than the one simple skill"(Ch. 57)
