2-2-4. Bridge of Distinction and Nondistinction
Like this, the concept of Samjae is the most underlying one that provides distinctive formulation of what we cannot distinguish. And it is a reflexive, thus a fundamental concept. For the concept of Samjae includes in its consideration the concept that enables subjective to reflect itself. This concept explains how there can be distinction on things, and at the same time, it also includes reflection on itself, so that there can be no more concept that enables further reflection about this from the more fundamental standpoint.
Then what is it that we can obtain through this most fundamental framework of Samjae? It is that we can see both object and the entirety that enables it from its behind, thus that we can see the relation of what changes and what doesn't change.
It is the object that we can distinguish. And everything we can distinguish changes. But what we cannot distinguish doesn't change. Hence it was said; ¡°There being something that has birth and another that has no birth, what has no birth has neither increasement nor extinction while what has birth capably increases yet disappears after all.¡±1) By the way, the distinguishable can change because they depend on the whole that is not distinguishable. The related entirety of objects and what are not objects, this is verily Haneul. And an object in it is Tang of which the existence is enabled by Haneul. A distinguishable object depends on the undistinguishable whole, because of which everything returns to "what has no birth"(Ùíßæ) after all. This is why it is said <Saek Jeuk Si Gong, Gong Jeuk Si Saek>(ßäñíãÀÍö ÍöñíãÀßä).2)
On the other hand the entirety itself where something change together doesn't change. And it cannot be discerned by itself. Thus it can be entirety and one, and so it can be as foundation of entities that change. Hence it was told, ¡°What has birth can be made only with dependence upon what has no birth.¡±3) Also Lao Tsu said, ¡°The two of being and non-being are the same, but after they are produced, they have different names. They both may be called deep and profound. Deeper and more profound, The door of all subtleties¡±,4) which means same thing just in different terms.
