3. Haneul(Heaven)

3-3. Standing and Walking

Haneul(the sky) never restricts itself. Although you may find some restrictions, each of them is intended by itself with freedom. Imitating this most parts of your body can be free if you support your whole body only with one leg. This is why it is the way of Haneul to support body with one leg.

Standing on one leg like this enables you to walk. Walking is always performed by moving your weight from one leg to the other. This walking is both fundamentals and center of technique. Because you can move your body through walking. In this way your entirety moves. "Following these principles of Taekwondo your attack should hit the enemy with whole body, and not with only hands or feet."(Ch.34) And because you can get farther from or closer to your opponent by means of walking. It means walking provides you with control on distance.

Also are there Samjae in this kind of Taekwondo's walking, which is composed of three factors. To explain them, it is Haneul to lower your pose, it is Tang to collapse balance, and Saram to stand on one leg.1) First of all, the universal principle of all kinds of walking is to fall down. "A motion can be obtained only when a balance collapses to show out its possibility and the balance in its collapse always."(Ch.22) It means; to move your weight from one leg that supported your body to the other, it is the walking. Therefore, the essence of walking in daily motion is composed of two; first, to stand on one leg moment by moment; second, to collapse balance moment by moment. As "this motion of Taekwondo is nothing more rather than an action of daily life"(Ch.40), adding only one more thing makes the walking of Taekwondo. It is to keep low pose all the way, i.e. to drop your lower abdomen.

<footnotes>

1) Let me explain why Samjae of walking is like that. What makes walking what it is, i.e. what is distinguished is moving forth in collapse of balance, so it becomes Tang. (And this is also the approach, which is the factor of Tang.) When you walk you come to return to standing on one leg repeatedly, which becomes Saram. On the other hand, if you lower your pose in Taekwondo you can keep everything in its proper place for attack and defence, so this becomes Haneul.
