3-8. Basis

Among elements of technique, the basis is the way of Haneul. The Basis refers to the basic motion of Taekwondo, or the systematically organized basic elements. The great mountain can stay firm in strong wind owing to "the/ Dignity of time/ That has endured the long darkness of humility/ With itself in a humble way",1) so if you want such a firm technique you should "go down to the bottom of life./ On that lowest place/ I have to harden/ The wet and flabby ground/ To be as firm as rock."2) These reasons bring basis to the center of all kinds of technique.

The constituents of basis are the basics. Whar are the basics of Taekwondo? "It is what has all necessary factors of Taekwondo as compressed and summarized."(Ch.54) To make an analogy it is like the base of a fortress, and like the axioms of the mathematics. "A good building can be made always on firm foundation. Just as it is the foundation that supports the whole giant building when the earth shakes, so is it basic of Taekwondo that makes you able to control over the opponent adapting yourself with no mistake in unexpected emergent situations."(Ch.54)

By the way, the basic training of Taekwondo is simple, hard and boring. Since it is simple it is not marvelous; since it is hard it is not easy to practice; and since it is boring people don't enjoy it. Without the firm basic techniques, however, you cannot get the TAEKWONDO. This is why there is only a little people who know TAEKWONDO although there are many who train Taekwondo.

Considering the practical meaning, i.e. the objective of attack and defence in Taekwnodo it is more desirable to train substantial techniques, though they are simple, than those that are marvelous yet empty. Particularly, marvelousness brings luxury, which will prevent you from accepting true training. To the contrary, your attachment of only the basics will make you difficult to tell others the truth, which can be said as mean. "extravagance leads to insubordination, and parsimony to meanness. It is better to be mean than to be insubordinate."3)

The basics of Taekwondo are overall constituted of three; basic pose, basic motion and basic technique. The basic pose is composed of basic Seogi, Kyorugi pose and the mental posture. The basic Seogi is the pose of Charyot, Jumbi Seogi, Juchum Seogi, Abkubi and Dwitkubi. And the basic technique is composed of Jireugi(punch), Chagi(kicking) and Makki(blocking).
