About This Book

4-3. Change

The factors of Tang in Taekwondo is to control over the opponent by means of change. The change for supremacy over the opponent, for which you need technique, deceiving him and approaching him.

Punch up kick down. Step on the opponent's foot and, his attention falling down, punch his face. If he avoid his face from it you should drop your pose striking on his vital point or pulling his ankle to fell him back. Felling him back, if he resists, pull him forth to fell him this time. Push and, with his resistance, pull and throw him. In this change of motions you should combine Kang-gi(technique) with Yu-gi(technique).

In this change, if you have your opponent opposed to the world with your stepping aside it, this technique is one of Yu-gi. On the other hand, if you first of all get harmonized, so get unified with the world so as to mediate the his opposition to the world by yourself as a part of the world, it is one of Kang-gi. For this control over changes you have to learn and master the related techniques.

What comprehends Kang-gi and Yu-gi, that is, the principle that rules objectively the changes between Kang-gi and Yu-gi is the way of Haneul. For Kang and Yu are merely two different aspects of one thing in its entirety, which is verily the Haneul. On the other, what links Kang-gi to Yu-gi and Yu-gi to Kang-gi in a flow, that is, the principle of use that weaves the flow of Kang-gi and Yu-gi from your own subjective is the way of Saram. Thus, with unification of the ways of Haneul and Saram you come to possess that of Tang naturally. Therefore, if you continue the right training sincerely along the way of Haneul and additionally preserve what you intend to do along the way of Saram you will find nobody that you cannot control over.
