4-4-3. Center of Motion

Approach should be simple as just itself. Simple approach is getting close with no preparatory motion. This simple motion is possible only grounded on right manner of walking. I mean, it is possible along the way of Haneul.

The walking that enables simple approach is that that moves the whole body focussing on the downer stomach, with movement of legs simultaneously. For its sake you have to stand always ready to collapse your balance. This is the reason why you should stand on one leg all the way in basic poses of Taekwondo. Based on this right kind of basic pose you can get the walking of right approach, namely walking of Taekwondo. It is that of one rhythm of a moment.

This walking of one rhythm is simple, so fast, thus sudden, yet looking so trivial that it goes hidden. Thus it is that of approaching the opponent prior to his withdrawal. How can you perform this walking? Standing on one leg you collapse your balance to begin walking, and complete collapse of balance finishes your walking too. Thus it makes one rhythm. Since you, collapsing balance, attach movement of legs simultaneously or your leg pushes the body to collapse your balance, the beginning of walking is swift and abrupt. Walking depends on the collapse of balance, which means the movement of a whole body.

TAEKWONDO is the principle of fighting technique and that of everything at the same time, so just as in technique of fighting the movement of center is important so also in man's talking and etiquette its center, namely the movement of sincere mind is important. It is the love for man. The Confucianist name it ¡®Sincere Dedication¡¯(Chung-seo,õ÷ßð). Therefore, ¡°the sincere dedication is not far from the <Do>, and it is not to do to others what you do not like when done to yourself¡±1) Through this sincere dedication you should train yourself how to treat others, and then you can learn how to move your true mind when you meet others.

Without distinct movement of your center you cannot make success of using techniques of Kang-Yu, so the principles of Taekwondo that gain supremacy over the opponent is all the same in everything. Therefore, your words, but for the sincere mind, cannot persuade your friend despite its splendid expression, and your manner, unless you have true respect for him, cannot attract his favor despite your etiquette. You can just avoid his severe hate at most. Accordingly it was said in The Doctrine of the Mean: ¡°Sincerity is the end and beginning of things; without sincerity there would be nothing. On this account, the superior man regards the attainment of sincerity as the most excellent thing.¡±2)
