4-4-5. Distance of Matbuteum
As Matbuteum is the end of technique, each Matbuteum differs according to each
technique. It means, distance differs. You as a Taekwondo man can penetrate
your opponent with this knowledge of distance, and control over him with it,
too. How can you do this?
Distance is what you can see. And it is objective. So the third parties can
see it more easily. In Samjae Haneul(Heaven) and Tang(Earth) when united make
distance, ¡°since the way of Haneul
is to deposit every part of yours in its proper place and the way of Tang is
to have your opponent opposed to the world where you are harmonized, you can
always find the best distance of Taekwondo whenever unity of the both keeps
each part of yourself in its own proper position with your opponent opposed
to the world where you are harmonized.¡±(Ch.19) This is the reason why distance
is most objective so that the third parties can see it more easily.
As this distance can be seen by eyes like this you can read the opponent's
technique in it. For an example, if your opponent want the distance where you
cannot reach him stretching an arm while you can hit him with a slight approach
he is a boxer. If he draws back as you approach him by that distance he is a
kicker, and if he wants closer distance than that of boxer he must be ready
for the technique to grab you throwing or felling you down. This is how you
know your opponent with the knowledge of distance. That is to say, ¡°when
you know your opponent's distance you know what kind of attack he will make
in whatever state and know how you should defend it, thus you know your opponent.¡±(Ch.20)
In addition to that, you can use this distance not only as a basic resource
to read his intention but also as a primary weapon to deceive and suppress down
him. For, if he reads your intention by distance you can deceive him of your
intention by means of deceiving the distance, thus you can deceive him of your
technique and weapon. This is to deceive him with your distance, and futhermore,
to control over him with it. In this manner, the deceit itself being the strongest
weapon, if you were a Taekwondo man who can read your opponent you must prohibit
yourself from approaching an opponent of whom the distance you cannot read.
Hence it is said you should use distance as a weapon.
