4-6. Exactness
In elements of technique the way of Tang is exactness. How should it be exact?
When I say a technique is exact I mean the motion is appropriate for the intention.
It means, the motion has <Sae> and <Nal>.
What are <Sae> and <Nal>? "It
is the sseuim-sae that is the technique or method of how to control over the
opponent with a motion protecting yourself, i.e. the principle of organizing
motions in poomsae. So it is the meaning of each motion in poomsae; what is
this motion for. And, just as the sharp edge of a knife is necessary to cut
something power in motion of poomsae is also necessary to fell down and suppress
your opponent when you perform the motions along the way of sseuim-sae, and
this power is the sseuim-nal."(Ch.51) Each of these Sseuim-sae and
Sseuim-nal is called <Sae> and <Nal> respectively, in brief. "Taekwondo
poomsae is a sparring with such imaginary opponent"(Ch.49) and "the
established pattern of right motions, focused on techniques, that every Taekwondo
man should follow in most general situations,"(Ch.49) so <Sae>
and <Nal> of poomsae are verily each of technique.
<Sae> and <Nal> of techniques can be obtained only when you become
proficient in them in good condition with full understanding. In order to get
<Sae> and <Nal> of each technique you should understand how it can
be a technique for offence and defence of Taekwondo, which means you understand
how the principle of Kang-Yu works in the motion. On the other hand, to become
proficient in them in good condition is to get skilled in them along the ways
of Samjae. There are several steps for you according to your situation.
The first step is to repeat the motion by yourself. Then you should get experience
of using the technique with your opponent. This is the step for adaptation.
In the third step you should try to apply it to actual cases. For the last you
should repeat the entire process appropriately, achieving its invisible factors
completely. By the way, as "boundless
changes and applications of each Taekwondo motion are possible along this center
of basics"(Ch.54) it is necessary for you to master basic motions for
the sake of exact technique. Since "it
is basic of Taekwondo that makes you able to control over the opponent adapting
yourself with no mistake in unexpected emergent situations"(Ch.54)
you can get the exact technique only through the training of the right basic
motions.
If you want to learn techniques in exact way, you should practice and get skilled
in basic motions paying attention to three points. I mean, the three points
you have to keep in your mind doing the practice of basic motions are; "distinctness,
accordance and stableness."(Ch.55) In addition to that, "in
order to get all that you have to keep in basic motions you should perform them
with three teachings: big movement, the low centroid and accordance with breathing."(Ch.55)
"Ultimately it is Taekwondo
man's mind that rules" <Sae> and <Nal> in one,(Ch.51) so
you should keep confidence in your mind to get the exact technique. If you cannot
be confident of your controlling over your opponent although you've learned
technique, it tells you lack its proficiency, while if you are not confident
after proficiency, it tells you lack the exactness of techniques.
