5. Saram

5-4-1. Tactics

Concerned with the mind, deceiving the opponent along the way of Saram you can control the change of <Heo/sil> easily to suppress him down. Thus you can get those both of three precedences of the preceding attack and three catches of the counter attack.

¡°The preceding attack should precede three; it should precede his motion, it should precede his waiting and it should precede his expectation.¡±(Ch.29) For example, suppose the opponent punch you with his right fist, then you can neutralize his attack with faster slight push at his right shoulder. Although punching requires the movement of your whole body, since it cannot help coming from a movement of shoulder, you can blockade it with slight touch on his shoulder. This is to blockade his big movement with your small motion, which demands you to move earlier than him. It means you precede his motion. On the other hand, he, punching you with his fist, must believe you will stay there or at least withdraw a little only, yet not that you may advance suddenly. This is to precede his waiting. And he must not predict you will hit his shoulder although you approach. This is verily to precede his expectation.1)

If you face your opponent in Taekwondo he must have something to expect, which will bring him to wait for something. Deceiving him you can precede what he expects. Preceding what he expects you can precede what he waits for. Preceding what he waits for you can precede his motion. In this way you can get the attack of three precedences of Taekwondo. When he gets ready to strike you with his fist you don't show any touch of approach toward him. This way you can deceive him and you can push his shoulder abruptly. He is not ready because he believes I cannot attack him yet. You have to thrust this blind point. Thus you can control over him.

¡°The counter attack also should catch three; it should catch the crevice of his motion, it should catch what he failed thinking of in his preparation and it should catch what is not firm in his tide.¡±(Ch.29) For example, if the opponent attacks you with continued kicks you can catch the crevice between the motions of his kicks. You can do ti only when you count the rhythm of his kicking motion to catch up his rhythm with your rhythm. It is to catch his motion through the rhythm. This is the way of how to catch the crevice of the opponent's motion. On the other hand, if you attack the opponent's foot or face when he pays attention to your attack at his trunk you can succeed easily in stabbing his blind point. This is the way to catch what he failed thinking of. He rise his tide in his attack, but if his pose were high to be unstable, you can catch this point and throw him. This is also an example of the way to catch what is not firm in his tide.

Just as important it is to deceive your opponent in mind and tactics like this, so important it is not to be deceived yourself as well. You ought to reduce your desire in order not to be deceived. The way to be not deceived is to rely on the rightness. Therefore I say you should rely on the way of Haneul when you control technique along the way of Saram.
