5-6. Timeliness

Discussing the way of Saram in technique, it is timeliness.

In order to be timely in movement you should be able to be fast enough at first. The first training beginners should try for increasement of their speed is the sprint. With the basic training of sprint you must also train yourself of moving center, reconciling motion and controlling mind. And the criterion of whether your motion is fast or slow lies not in the movement of hands or feet but in that of Samjae of body, particularly in the speed of movement of downer stomach, which corresponds to Tang. Let me consider this timeliness from the viewpoints of moving center, reconciling motion and controlling mind.

[Moving Center] What is the reason that moving center is important in speed and technique? ¡°Only when you move center of the trunk properly your hand and foot will move naturally with proper speed between yourself and him in accordance with it. The motions are speedy and powerful.¡±(Ch.30) This is reason why moving center is important. It means, the movements of a terminal part are attached to the center of the body, namely, to the trunk centered on the downer stomach, and without the movement of its center, even though

That is, the movements of terminal parts are subject to that of the center of body, i.e, of the trunk focused on the downer stomach, without which, though movements of hands or feet were big, their power cannot be big. This has its root in the same reason of that you can go farther with a step on a wagon that runs than with two steps on the road. This moving center refers to the movement of your trunk, and its basic training course is sprint. And this is why you need training of sprint. If you find your moving center were too slow you should check if you lack sufficient training for arms and legs.

[According Motion] What's the reason that according motion is important in speed and technique? In the accordance your motion ¡°is slight and quick because the whole motion is distributed to and shared by each part of the body. In addition, since every part moves together at a time in accordance it is natural and invisible.¡±(Ch.34) For an instance, with your feet push your trunk, which spinning push your shoulder and spread your folded arm to punch forth. ¡°All the same in your kicking too. Your supporting foot should push the ground when you lift the kicking foot and you move your body forward while the supporting foot should keep the balance of sudden falling down forward of your waste. Then the waste swings the lab and the lab swings the calf to pierce his center with the foot tip.¡±(Ch.36) With the accordance of all these parts your Jumeok Jireugi can be fast though each part move slow. In addition, the whole motion can be powerful although the movement each part were slight. But as each part of the motion is divided over the entire body it is not well seen. This is why the according motion is important in speed and technique. This accorded motion can be obtained through training of basic motions.1)

[Controlling Mind] For the last you can be faster with reconciliation of mind and body. Its key point is the control of mind. ¡°No matter how flexible a body might be it cannot be more flexible than a mind and no matter how fast you might walk you cannot move faster than your mind, and although you had a hard body with abundant power they would be of no use without your mind to use them. Therefore, only when you control your mind at will you can accord smoothness, speed and power in each movement to the best of your ability.¡±(Ch.53) Then you can stop hesitation, and you can unify deceiving your opponent and deceiving yourself in oneness. This is verily the Ilgiyae, for the well controled mind, thus the reconciled mind with technique is the one.

If you can be fast enough, then you should control your motion to be fast appropriately with rhythm, breath and temperance. Its adequate name is the ¡°timeliness.¡±
