6-11. Trinity of Kicking

There are the forms of Samjae again in each technique of Taekwondo. Thus, technique, "though it has no shape, come to get its shape owing to change, and my body, though it is only one, becomes three according to its use,"1) so the substance of technique is one while its use becomes three.

Let me consider, for an example, the kicking, which is the typical technique of Taekwondo. All kinds of kicking technique are reduced into one; to fold knee up high and kick.2) That is, you should keep your lower stomach low lifting your knee folded to the chest. By this motion you should also have Samjae of your body correct to keep your upper body easily straightened up. There are three ways to spread your leg from this pose for a kick, which are Ap-chagi, Yop-chagi and Dollyo-chagi. Therefore, each of them has different figure yet shares only one substance.

Every basic kick is nothing more than one same motion, thus nothing more than Ilgiyae, which is the Haneul as the indistinguishable entirety. On the other hand, figures of Ap-chagi, Yop-chagi and Dollyo-chagi belong to the Tang as the distinguishable. Where is the Saram? The foundation that enables this distinction is the Saram, which is verily the mind of Taekwondo man.
