6-7-1. Lookout

Let me discuss how temperance penetrates all the principles of controlling mind and body, and up to that of society.

"Taekwondo permeates your inside through training and your life through yourself."(Ch.63) Therefore the essential key of training is the temperance like that of technique. Lao Tzu said, "there is no calamity greater than lavish desire, there is no greater guilt than discontentment."1) It means, training without temperance will be excessive, so it will only damage your body. It is natural and reasonable that the main keys of technique and training are same in this manner.

You can get temperance only when you have nothing excessive, and so, you can only when you look out for nothing excessive also in your mind. If you get this lookout in easy way along the right principle it is piousness. It means, "piousness is the careful mind to keep everything in is own proper position, so that nothing gets out of its way."(Ch.18) With this piousness you as a Taekwondo man should look out for the three impartialities of yourself not to lose your self; you should look out for the three excessiveness of your relationship not to lose your friends; and you should look out for the three unbalance of surrounding not to lose the world.(Ch.18) Therefore, "only in the extremely controlled use Taekwondo can help achievement of contribution to society and offer everyone positive and rich meaning of life, as it is intended."(Ch.17)

The attitude of lookout by piousness is alike 'the fasting of the mind' Chuang Tzu said of. Therefore he said, "Confucious said, "Make your will one! Don't listen with your ears, listen with your mind. No, don't listen with your mind, but listen with your spirit. Listening stops with the ears, the mind stops with recognition, but spirit is empty and waits on all things. The Way gathers in emptiness alone. Emptiness is the fasting of the mind."2)

Why do we have to talk of lookout? All kinds of morality share same one substance, but as each of them has different way of its own practice, they are divided into numerous ones. The moral training of Taekwondo ought to be same as its essence, and only then you can cultivate your moral personality in Taekwondo. This is why you should pursue morality with attitude of lookout that is the core of general martiality. It is the inner attitude not only of individual behavior but also of defending a country. Wu-tzu(çïí) said; ¡°as a rule, the best way to secure a country is to be on your thorough guard¡±3), which means the same thing.4)
