6. Ilgiyae

6-8. Ignorance

Samjae is the framework by which to understand the nondistinctive truth in distinctive way, so it itself cannot be attributed to an object. Thus, Samjae cannot be a technique by itself that is a part of a martial art. Samjae, however, can also be understood as another figure of the nondistinctive One, so it can be numerous aspects of Ilgiyae on the other hand. Only in this meaning it can be a technique. It is not a technique but an art of skill.

TAEKWONDO is the principle that has been ruling the change of everything since the time when there was nobody, and as it contains the eternal principle we can call it a <Do(Ô³,ÇÏ´Ã)> that is "what makes everything be such, i.e., it is the principle that penetrates everything".(Ch. 1) Relying on Samjae you can recognize its nondistinctive truth, and in the same manner you can also understand Chuang Tzu's saying: ¡°The Great Way is not named; Great Discriminations are not spoken; Great Modesty is not humble; Great Daring does not attack.¡±1) This was suggested in the Dharmapada saying: ¡°that Truth to which the Tathagata has attained is neither real nor unreal.¡±2)

Many people have commented on Kang-Yu of martial arts. But none of them commented on Samjae. As we can perceive in the foundation of formulating 8 trigrams in I Ching, however, the changes of yin-yang, Kang-Yu and Heo-Sil cannot be said sufficiently without references to the Samjae. For yins and yangs, or Kangs and Yus cannot formulate 8 trigrams but only remain as mere each of them without Samjae. Therefore, you can no more discuss yin-yang, Kang-Yu or Heo-Sil without knowledge of Samjae than you can talk about bloomings of a tree without understanding of its root, and than talk about movements of hands and feet ignoring that of trunk.

Owing to those discussions with ignorance of its foundation, although most martial arts includes both Kang-gi and Yu-gi, some martial artists emphasized Yu only, and none of them could systematically discuss the formless principles or its factors that underlies those visible techniques like Kang and Yu. Moreover, although many martial artists emphasized the importance of mind in martial arts, since they couldn't talk of Samjae, their explanation couldn't be detailed enough to teach people in spite of their correctness, and although many martial artists mentioned distance, tide or balance briefly, their comments couldn't be balanced explanation in spite of their correctness. All of them are owing to that they could understand merely the changes of Kang-Yu, Heo-Sil and yin-yang through their experiences yet not Samjae that underlies them.

Because of this reason, those who couldn't master the techniques of Kang-Yu couldn't understand why they couldn't, while when practitioners hear explanations about some part of distance, tide, balance, rhythm or something else, although they agreed to its rightness, they felt confused by complicatedness as well, not knowing what teaching and when to accept and follow. Since old time it has been said: ¡°Every touch of Han Eul is as precise as a square, but, as it has neither sound nor breath it is difficult to see its truth,¡±3) which refers to the same corrupt practices. You can overcome those limits only through Taekwondo that is the martial arts based on the Korean traditional thought.
