7. Kang-Yu

  7-10-2. Coupling of Kang-Yu

Kang and Yu ought to be possessed together because Kang and Yu are the coupled concepts like Yin and Yang. Thus, the old text says; ¡°Yang alone cannot give a birth while Yin alone cannot give an existence either, and if they conflicts excessively their building will become imperfect. Only when both respond to each other in a harmony they can help fostering. Although they produce, if with disharmony, they can achieve nothing. Female and male when coupled can lay an egg and breed, so that they transfer each other with no decline.¡±1)

Therefore, in discussion of anything you can neither talk of Kang without Yu nor of Yu without Kang meaningfully. That is, it is meaningless to say hardness without concept of softness or to say softness without concept of hardness. This is because Kang and Yu are coupled concepts not only in phenomenon but also in conceptual scheme. The concentration and the following, which are the essential points of Kang and Yu, are not coupled concepts in themselves, however. This is merely a change of the conceptual relationship that comes from that the concentration and the following are the key points to embody the hardness and the softness in man's motion through his mind and body.

You can preserve your life by concentration even in adverseness to your opponent, so the concentration becomes the essential points of Kang-gi. On the other hand, you can get what you intend to do by following in neutralization of his intention, so the following becomes the essential point of Yu-gi. It is his own living will that mediates the both. By contrary each of the hardness and the softness represents some objective property by itself. Thus, what is mediated by the living will is what gives rise to the change of conceptual relationship. The root of this distinction is nothing but the mind.
