7. Kang-Yu

7-7. Entirety of Offense and Defense

The entirety of offense and defense is nothing but the technique of Kang-Yu.

Sun Tzu said; ¡°the crux of military operations lies in your pretence of accommodating one's self to the designs of the enemy followed by concentration of your forces against the enemy. Then from a distance of a thousand Li you can kill his general. This is described as the ability to attain one's aim in an artful and ingenious manner.¡± Not only concerned with military operations. All the same also concerned with Kyorugi of Taekwondo, so you should deceive your opponent along the way of Saram accommodating yourself to his designs with concentration your strength on his blind point. This way you can control over bigger opponent with dextrous technique.

Therefore you should control over your opponent's Kang-gi(technique) with your softness while his Yu-gi(technique) with your hardness and quickness. How is it possible? ¡°The ways the hard and the soft win each other are like the followings. The soft can wrap and lead the hard only when each of its parts cooperates with another in a whole motion. Cutting down this whole the hard can suppress down the soft. On the other hand, the hard should adapt itself along what the will intends. Leading the direction the soft can keep the hard opposed to the world.¡±(Ch.41) ¡°After all, the subject who controls or who is under a control is the man who uses the hardness and the softness, yet is not the hardness or the softness itself.¡±(Ch.41) Sometimes a Kang-gi is controled over by the harder and a Yu-gi by the softer, but they are not apt for being called as techniques. They are surpassing the opponent's mind and body with the superiority of your strength and better condition and no more. Thus they cannot be regarded as the essence of TAEKWONDO.

Therefore, when you block the opponent's jireugi, if you do that in the right way along the ways of Samjae, you don't have to hurry up yet to be timely and nor you have to use your strength yet to deliver bigger impact with so big pain to him who was blocked. Here, you can be timely because you follow his hurrying motion confusing it with your temperate rhythm, and in addition, you can make him feel bigger pain and impact because you ¡°make little movement big relying on <Do>¡±(Ch.36) concentrating on his weak part. With a Yu-gi added to it you can reduce the impact as you intend yet ruining his balance all the more, which is the technique of ¡°Redirection not interference and/ Attaining victory using the/ Opponent's own power.¡±2)

Your opponent may also be able to use the techniques of Kang-Yu, then how can you not be controlled by him but can get control over him by the same principle? You can be the controller with the three kinds of right mind of virtuousness, wisdom and courage in steady training.
