Part V. ATTACK AND DEFENCE

Chapter 33

Taekwondo Composed of Attack and Defense

“What mind does Taekwondo require?”

“An attacking motion demands an attacking mind while a defending motion demands a defending mind. In essence, a mind to subdue your opponent.”

Taekwondo is composed of attacks and defenses. Attack or defense is the delivering of minds between you and your opponent. Hands, feet, bodies and weapons mediate this interaction. Nothing can be Taekwondo without attacks and defenses, and Taekwondo ceases immediately to be such without the delivering of minds.

What then is the delivering of minds as regards attack or defense in Taekwondo? Attack in Taekwondo is nothing but the delivering of a mind to destroy your opponent’s intentions while defense in Taekwondo is the delivering of your mind to protect your own intentions. Neither is fundamentally different from the other. Further, attack means making the opponent opposed to the world in the delivering of minds while defense is harmonizing oneself with the world. Again, neither is fundamentally contradictory to the other.
