Created POOMSAE

These new poomsaes were designed to train students in TKD class of SNU. Most of TKD poomsaes are too difficult to understand its applied use, and it is not easy to recognize each technique of fighting in a given poomsae. So I designed the following new poomsaes for beginners, with combinations of basic and important techniques of Taekwondo.

The name of the series of poomsaes is "Byonhwa", which means "Change" in Korean. Its implication suggests every technique is a variation of an ultimate skill; Ilgiyae. And the entire system of basic poomsae is composed of only three poomsaes. But each one has two step or level in it; one is simple type and the other complex type. The complex type is additional version of its simple type.

When you practice a poomsae you should learn and memorize its simple type at first. The simple type of a poomsae is composed of only less than 6 basic important techniuqes. After many repetitions of the simple type you can shift to complex type, adding some more sophisticated techniques. And final level of the exercise of a poomsae is the complex type. But in order to get a full understanding of a poomsae, you also should learn its variations. A variation of a poomsae is resulted by replacing some techniques with anothers. Those variations were suggested so that you can should any style that fit you best. Any one can be a center among the complex type and its several variations. I mean you may should only one among them and train yourself of only it. Any one will include all of the others in the end.

This system may look too complicated. It it were to look too difficult, you'd better not think too much of the whole system. You should just learn and repeat the simple type of each poomsae, that's all. If you repeat it enough many times to put the exact motions not in your brain but in your body, you will be able to shift to any direction to complex type or variations.

Along this system of poomsae training you can approach more close to the invisible ultimate reality of beyond a form.

NOTICE : It is easy to memorize the motions of a poomsae, particularly in the simple type. It means that you have to find and learn something else than the visible motions. It is Sae and Nal of the poomsae. (Ch. 51 of PPT) You can see somewhat detailed explanations of its Sae and Nal, and if you cannot understand the Sae and Nal of a poomsae you will not be able to use the motion, and it will be impossible for you to learn practice it in exact way.
