7. Kang-Yu

7-10. Technique

Techniques appears as Kang-gi and Yu-gi as their inner principles are divided according to categories of Kang-Yu. Kang-gi and Yu-gi when coupled with each other are called "Gipeop"(art of Technique). That is to say, Kang-gi and Yu-gi compose the art of every kind of offense and defense, and furthermore the category of every intentioinal motion of man. Therefore, Kang-gi and Yu-gi exist as factors of Tang among Samjae. Thus, “offense is making him opposed to the world in this delivering minds while defense is making yourself harmonized with the world."(Ch.33)

Kang-gi and Yu-gi are the kinds of technique. What makes Kang-gi what it is is the Kang, namely hardness, and what makes Yu-gi what it is is the Yu, namely softness. What enables man's motion to be a technique including hardness and softness, it is the way of Haneul and its factors. It is entire, specifying it, it is the mind of Taekwondo of Mu-Nyom-Mu-Sang(freedom from all of ideas and thoughts, 無念無想) that penetrates everything, and the temperance. On the other hand, it is the man's will that uses for itself Kang-gi and Yu-gi. This is verily the way of Saram, namely the mind as mentioned in the foregoing. You should control it with your breath.

Hence it was said: “How is it possible that the hard can win the soft sometimes while the soft also win the hard another times in their fight? It is because the winning and losing begins with what you want to do and by way of the force in your motion, then it returns to your will."(Ch. 41) And “After all, the subject who controls or who is under a control is the man who uses the hardness and the softness, yet is not the hardness or the softness itself.”(Ch.41)

Everything returns to the matter of controlling your mind(歸一) after all, so, “just go along with things and let your mind move freely. Resign yourself to what cannot be avoided and nourish what is within you-this is best.”1)
