4-4-2. Essence of Approach

The essence of approach lies in the movement of your downer stomach. Only when your downer stomach moves toward your opponent it can be a true approach, and by contrary, if it moves backward, even if your upper body moves toward him, it cannot be an approach. This is because the downer stomach corresponds to Tang(Earth) in body and the meaning of Tang is distinguishing.

<»çÁø> <<ÇÏ´ÜÀüÀÌ °¡±î¿ÍÁö´Â µ¿ÀÛ »çÁø, ±×¸®°í »óü¸¸ Á¢±ÙÇÏ°í ¾ûµ¢ÀÌ°¡ ºüÁø »çÁø ºñ±³>>

You seem to approach yet don't make a true approach, so you pull your downer stomach back, because you force your body forward yet draw your mind back. The withdrawal of your mind comes from your fear. It means, you don't follow the way of Haneul in right way. In case you seem to approach yet don't make a true approach your techniques of Kang and Yu don't work well. Thus you will have no technique to use. Therefore, the approach should be distinct. This is why it is said that the key point of technique is the way of Tang.

The importance of approach is all same both when you move forward and when you draw back. If you have no idea of approach your fear will push your shoulders forward but not your mind so that the whole body don't move forward when you move forward on one hand, and the fear will make you hurry up to draw so that your hands and feet draws back earlier than your trunk destroying your balance after all when you draw back on the other hand. Thus, though you haste your technique is slow and imprecise.

In advance or retreat, your body should be always easy and comfortable with no hesitation. Then, the Samjae of your head, chest and downer stomach can move together so that you can get the harmony of hands and feet. Therefore, for an example, you must keep approaching even in your retreat for a counter kick. Beginners usually think of only the retreat of their body in counter kicks, so they fail to thrust the opponents' blind point on time after retreat. This is because they don't know the approach in retreat.

<»çÁø: Ãʺ¸ÀÚ°¡ Áö³ªÄ¡°Ô ¹°·¯³ª¼ ±âȸ¸¦ ÀÒ´Â ÀÚ¼¼>

The way of Hanuel is more basic than and belongs to higher technique that of Tang. Therefore, the good training shifts from the way of Haneul to that of Tang and then to that of Saram, whereas the use of technique flows from the way of Saram through that of Tang to that of Haneul. Because ¡°while everything has its sameness at first then followed by its difference,¡± ¡°Man knows everything is different from one another and then knows that everything is same.(Ch.61) This means same as what Confucius intended saying; ¡°The way of the superior man may be compared to what takes place in traveling, when to go to a distance we must first traverse the space that is near, and in ascending a height, when we must begin from the lower ground.¡±1) It means, it is reasonable that the directions of training and technical use are opposite. The center of training is in human body more than in human mind, and the body follows the principle of the Nature. Whereas the center of technical use is in human mind, which follows first what the man intends to do.
