5-4. Saram in Mind

To discuss the way of Saram in mind, it is the way of Saram to preserve what you intend to do following the ways of both Haneul and Tang; so, to seek his blind points, keeping continuous attack on them. Originally the way of Saram is "not losing what you want to do", so it's meaning in Taekwondo is to protect yourself with control over the opponent, i.e. not losing continuous attack and defence. It's inner spirit is nothing but tactics, and every kind of tactics is based on intention to deceive the opponent.

Thus Sun Tsu also said; "All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable of attacking, feign incapacity; when active in moving troops, feign inactivity. When near the enemy, make it seem that you are far away; when far away, make it seem that you are near. Hold out baits to lure the enemy. Strike the enemy when he is in disorder. Prepare against the enemy when he is secure at all points. Avoid the enemy for the time being when he is stronger. If your opponent is of choleric temper, try to irritate him. If he is arrogant, try to encourage his egotism. If the enemy troops are well prepared after reorganization, try to wear them down. If they are united, try to sow dissension among them. Attack the enemy where he is unprepared, and appear where you are not expected. These are the keys to victory for a strategist. It is not possible to formulate them in detail beforehand."

On the other hand, I said the mind to deceive yourself was important in the way of Tang. In what is it different from the mind to deceive the opponent of the way of Saram? To point out its actual focus, the mind to deceive yourself in the way of Tang is 'erasing yourself' not less than 'deceiving yourself'. You should continue the right hard training stubbornly to follow the way of Haneul, so as to get rid of fear in yourself, then through repetition of technique you can remove your intention that precedes your motion. This is verily a meaning of erasing yourself. Then, the opponent cannot help being deceived by you because you, who he sees through, are deceived first along the way of Saram. In this way, the way of Saram accords with that of Tang in technique.
