7-4-1. Generality of Yu-Principle

Buddhist teach us "Abandon attachment and stop earthly desires." This is the teaching about ideal softness. Attachment to nothing. Just move in the framework of techniques, which is only because you are used to it owing to training, and you should not be attached to it either. Thus you come to get out of your failure of what you intend to do. This is the implication of Yu-technique(Yu-gi). The drum, which changes strokes of drumsticks to its sound, "can remain as a drum not broken yet realized as what it is because its inside is fully empty."(Ch.37) Figuratively speaking, this being empty inside of the drum is like the Buddhist's emptiness. Just as you can abandon your attachment with the knowledge on the empty nature of all kinds of dharma[ð³ÛöÍößÓ].1)

What's the reason you cannot use Yu-technique? Because you are attached to a technique. What can you get from that attachment? Nothing but that you get exhausted and defeated. Thus I say; don't be attached to technique, and just follow principles. In this way you can get out of the earthly anguish of defeats. It doesn't differ from the monks' saying that ¡°abandon attachments and stop earthly anguishes.¡±

The extremity of Yu can be said in the confucan term to be ¡°Sa Gi Jong In¡±. Mencius said, "When anyone told him that he had made a mistake, Tzu-lu was delighted. When he heard a fine saying, Yu bowed low before the speaker. The Great Shun went even further. He was ever ready to fall into line with others, giving up his own ways for theirs, and glad to take from others that by which he could do good."2) Here, 'giving up his own ways for theirs' is Sa Gi Jong In, which is the principle of Yu.

On the other hand, Chuan Tsu said, "Let your mind wander in simplicity, blend your spirit with the vastness, follow along with things the way they are, and make no room for personal views-then the world will be governed,"3) and this can be regarded as the theory of Yu-technique Taoists talk of.

In any case, more specific concrete explanation according to the system of Taekwondo can be given as "avoiding opponent's attack with oneness of fullness and emptiness."(Ch.37) This is to explain the principle of Yu-gi based on the Beop of Heosil.
