5-5. Indignation

In training, particularly in Kyorugi, the most prevailed fault is losing the attacking mind in a motion of attack and your mind's drawing back prior to your body in a defense. This is not to catch what you intend to do in Taekwondo, yet just to rely on the mere motion and technique, which is to lose the way of Man. And you cannot help losing also both motion and technique.

Either of Sky and Earth is meaningless without Man. The root of this truth retrocedes even to that, when Samjae begins, distinction can be only with an intentional subject, i.e. what a man intends to do. Thus, they say the heavenly time and the geographical benefit cannot be better than the people's harmony from a wide viewpoint, and that none of principle and technique is useless without bloody spirit from a narrow viewpoint. "This is what is meant by saying that the cultivation of the person depends on the rectifying of the mind"1).

Therefore, it refers to how you can technify mind and body of Taekwondo in right way, saying, "When you attack the opponent you should thrust him with your killing spirit at first, catch him with your piercing sight the next, and then control him with your motion. The world is the mind. However changeful he may be he cannot make more change than a mind, and however speedy he may be he cannot escape from the reach of your sight. Therefore, there is none that you cannot control over when you reconcile intention, sight and movement in one. This is why you can control over anyone with Taekwondo however speedy he may be."(Ch. 34) It means, attacking motion needs attacking mind while defending motion defendiing mind in Taekwondo. The center of this mind of attack and defense is the bloody spirit. Without this bloody spirit the Taekwondo motion a man performs cannot be more than a mechanical blind one, which relies on what it looks like yet fails to look beautiful like dance or to maintain meaningfulness in it.

This bloody spirit of Taekwondo man comes from indignation, and this indignation depends on the way of Earth that distinguishes what is right and what is wrong. And this distinctness, again, is connected to the penetration over the whole, i.e. the way of Sky. Therefore, "An old proverb says that those who construct themselves with the sword will be destroyed by the sword. However Taekwondo man never constructs himself with his fist, but with an ethical duty for justice, then uses his weapon, so he will not be destroyed by his weapon."2)(Ch. 17)

Accordingly, you ought not fail to start the Taekwondo training with cultivation of mind. Specifically, it is to be able to increase your own indignation, and then, to be able to control the indingation along the ethical duty in an wide scope and with the temperation of <Sae> and <Nal> of technique in an narrow scope, and finally, it is to forget the indignation maintaining it. This is the state of Mu Nyom Mu Sang and the minding skill of Pointing-way-of-legendary-hermit.

Why indignation? Only with indignation you can produce your attacking mind. Therefore, only when you can be indignant at what is wrong you can make your mind and action to correct it to be just. And the anger, which is the other side of indignation, is dark side of man's mind with strong power. Controling the anger you can control the center of your life. It is "the transcendence to inside of life" in Taekwondo. You should get indignant over what is wrong and unjust cultivating your mind and body continuously. This is the essence of Ho Yeon Ji Ki(flood-like Ki)of Mencius. Therefore, "to foster Ho Yeon Ji Ki(flood-like Ki) you must work at it and never let it out of your mind. At the same time, while you must never let it out of your mind, you must not forcibly help it grow either."4)

However, the other side of indignation is dark. Knowing this fact you should not give up indignation. You should rather transcend it. This is why you ar training Taekwondo now. Why you should not abandon indignation? For its other side is the mind of loving somebody, i.e. the love for man, and this is also the nature of man. Therefore, "<Do> is not far from man. When men try to pursue <Do>, which is far from the common indication of consciousness, it cannot be considered <Do>."5)
