7. Kang-Yu

7-9. Kang-Yu and Yin-Yang

Kang and Yu are by themselves the categories that classifies largely kinds of technique of Taekwondo and martial arts. At the same time, they are also the methodology to suggest intro-subjective methods of using all kinds of Taekwondo technique. By the way, why do I adopt not the concepts of 'Yin-Yang' but of 'Kang-Yu' to explain Taekwondo techniques?

Every technique of Taekwondo is in motion and in change by its nature. I believe, therefore, it is more advantageous to classify them with Kang-Yu in consideration of its changefulness. The conceptualization of Kang-Yu depends upon distinctions over entities already, hence it has same foundation as Yin-Yang. But what is referred by it is not a thing objectified with concrete distinction but the kinds of change; for and against; and appearing and disappearing, which is why I refer not to Yin-Yang but to Kang-Yu.

What is it that is mentioned by referring to Kang-Yu? It is the way of mind control. Thus its name is "Kibeop"(Beop of technique). And what is Kang-Yu? It is the mysterious subtlety of change. Thus it is now Kiyae(the art of technique, namely skill) Therefore, Kang and Yu is the principle of offense and defense, and ¡°offense or defense is delivering minds to each other between you and your opponent. Hands and feet, body and weapon mediate this interaction. Nothing can be Taekwondo without offenses and defenses, and the Taekwondo stops being what it is right away without delivering minds.¡±(Ch.33)

Taekwondo begins as a technique and ends as a technique too. Its technique is separated from its mind at first only, but they joins at the end. Therefore, we come to mention <Oneness of Haneul and Tang in Saram> again. Since intrinsically the mind is root of everything,1) it was also said in the Dharmapada: ¡°Everything is chieftained by our thought, is made up of our thoughts. If man speaks or acts with pure thought, happiness follows him in consequence like a shadow that never leaves him.¡±2) The substance of man(Saram) is also his mind, so with unification of mind and technique the way of Haneul and the way of Tang join each other in what he intends to do. ¡°The ultimate reality of Taekwondo is nothing but the mind.¡±(Ch. 43)

Accordingly, but for your mind in your Taekwondo training, the training cannot be a right one, and but for your mind in your technique it cannot make its effect. In the unification of technique and mind you can get the <Oneness of Haneul and Tang in Saram>. This is the Ilgiyae as TAEKWONDO.
